Census

William marks with a cross. He therefore could not write. The form was probably filled in by his wife on this behalf.

It is useful that mistakenly they filled in details of all of the children - including those who wre not in the house. Therefore we have details of children that might not have been listed elsewhere.

We also know that there were 12 children and that 9 were still living. I have therefore 'worked out' which ones look as if they have died.

William - age 55 was head of the household.

Maryann - his wife was aged 55

Their children still living at home:

  • Harriet - age 19 is single and working at the iron foundry
  • Elizabeth - age 16 is working at the iron foundry
  • Polly - age 13
  • William - age 8
  • Sarah - age 5

These children are not living at home:

  • Annie - age 33 is unmarried (Deceased)
  • Harry - age 30 is married and working as a machine sawyer
  • James - age 28 is married and working electrical equipment at the steel works
  • Mary - age 25 is married
  • Janney - age 23 is unmarried (Deceased)
