Hannah (nee Perry) Wolstenholme

(1868 - 1922)

On 10 October 1889 at the Congregational Church, Blackpool, UK
Hannah Eliza PERRY (born Wednesbury, Staffs in c1868; died 1 April 1922 in Blackpool)
married Ellis WOLSTENHOLME (born c1861 in Middleton, Lancashire; died 20 July 1930 in Blackpool).

The 1881 census shows Ellis WOLSTENHOLME as a 20yo unmarried assistant photographer
at 4 Braithwaite St, Layton with Warbreck, Lancs; born Middleton Lancs (RG11/4252 folio 18 p8).
Ellis WOLSTENHOLME’s funeral service was conducted in July 1930 by the ministers from the Primitive Methodist Church, Blackpool and from the Unitarian Church, Blackpool, Lancashire, UK.
Also on that 1881 census with Ellis are:

- his father Saml WOLSTENHOLME a 41 year old photographer born in Middleton, Lancs;

- his mother Ellen WOLSTENHOLME a 43 year old also born in Middleton;

- his nine siblings (all were born in Blackpool except the eldest who was born in Middleton):

= 16yo Mary A WOLSTENHOLME;

= 13yo Saml WOLSTENHOLME;

= 10yo Maria WOLSTENHOLME;

= 8yo Ellen WOLSTENHOLME;

= 6yo Catherine WOLSTENHOLME;

= 4yo Richard WOLSTENHOLME;

= 2yo Fred WOLSTENHOLME;

= 7mo twins Denis and Henry WOLSTENHOLME born in Blackpool, Lancs.

The 1891 census (RG 12/3453 folio xx page 50 No. 312) shows Hannah with:

- her husband Ellis WOLSTENHOLME a photographer assistant-worker and

- her widowed mother at 36 Park Road (not Row), Layton with Warbreck, Brunswick, Blackpool.

The 1901 census shows a 34 year old female HE WOLSTENHOLME
(but transcribed as WALSTERCHOLENST, she is Mrs Hannah Eliza WOLSTENHOLME maiden name PERRY)
at 114 Raikes Road, Blackpool (RG13/3971 folio 137 p39 No. 262) with:

- her husband Ellis

- her remarried mother (Mrs Eliza PERRY) who is shown on this census as Mrs Eliza POXON (although the surname looks similar to POXAM) (58yo born Wednesbury)

- her step-father Job POXON and

- her two children:

(a) Nellie WOLSTENHOLME born c1893 in Blackpool, Lancs. The birth records show at least two Nellie WOLSTENHOLMEs born in this period - reference: Q/E Jun 1892 Fylde 8e p715 and Q/E Mar 1893 Fylde 8e p714; and

(b) Ellis Granville WOLSTENHOLME (born 1891 in Blackpool, Lancs; died 16 Oct 1949, married Louie (c1894-1987)).

Ellis and Louie known children are:

- Beryl WOLSTENHOLME (1926-1928).

- Janet WOLSTENHOLME who may have married Ronald and had a son Peter.

The 1901 census also shows:
at 3 Wellington Terrace RG13/3972 folio 139 p4 No. 22 Ellis WOLSTENHOLME’s siblings:
Samuel 33yo unmarried photographer head of household on own account born in Middleton; all other siblings born in Blackpool:
24yo photographer worker Richard;
22yo photographer worker Fred [his twin Henry is still missing along with all sisters who may have married];
20yo photographer worker Dennis;
19yo photographer worker Lilian.

The parents of Ellis (Samuel and Ellen WOLSTENHOLME) cannot be found on the 1901 census, so perhaps they had died by then.

The book "Lancashire professional photographers 1840-1940" by Gillian JONES published by PhotoResearch, 2004 records on page 198:
