Occupation: Breeze Dealer

Coke is bituminous coal from which the volatile constituents have been driven off by heat. The fixed carbon and the ash are thereby fused together. Coke is clean burning, glowing red when heated with virtually no flame.

Coke Breeze is the fine screenings from crushed coke or the fine dust from coke as it is taken from the ovens. It is of a size varied in local practice but usually passed through a ½-inch or 3/4-inch screen opening to ensure only tiny fragments wre so classified.

Uses of Breeze

  • In iron processing, during the process of sintering the burning of fine coke (known as coke breeze) within the ore generates the necessary heat.
  • Fine dust and ashes (breeze) of all sorts are also added to concrete to make breeze blocks.

The furnaces have a waste material (breeze) and this waste material can be used by other industries.

A breeze dealer bought the waste dust and ashes and sold it to companies needing the waste product. It was a way to make money from recyling waste.
